4. Numbers, Time, and Spatial Directions
Numerical literacy is the backbone of survival. You need it for bargaining at General Bazar or understanding times for meetings in Cyberabad. Telugu numbers share some conceptual patterns with Hindi but follow a distinct Dravidian base.
1. Cardinal Numbers (1-100)
Start by learning 1 to 5 perfectly. Then learn the decades (10, 20, 30).
| Number | Telugu Word | Phonetic Notation |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Okati | ⟨O-ka-Ti⟩ |
| 2 | Rendu | ⟨Ren-Du⟩ |
| 3 | Moodu | ⟨Moo-Du⟩ |
| 4 | Naalugu | ⟨Naa-lu-gu⟩ |
| 5 | Aidu | ⟨Ai-du⟩ |
| 10 | Padi | ⟨Pa-di⟩ |
| 20 | Iravai | ⟨I-ra-vai⟩ |
| 30 | Muppai | ⟨Mup-pai⟩ |
| 50 | Yabhai | ⟨Ya-bhai⟩ |
| 100 | Vanda | ⟨Van-da⟩ |
(Note: The T and D are capitalized to indicate a retroflex sound, where you curl your tongue back slightly, like the ṭ in Tomato or ḍ in Dabba.)
2. Time and Temporal Markers
When communicating with a landlord or a maid, expressing 'when' is vital.
| Concept | Hindi Bridge | Telugu |
|---|---|---|
| Now | Abhi | Ippudu ⟨Ip-pu-du⟩ |
| Today | Aaj | Ee roju ⟨Ee ro-ju⟩ |
| Tomorrow | Kal (Future) | Repu ⟨Ray-pu⟩ |
| Yesterday | Kal (Past) | Ninna ⟨Nin-na⟩ |
| Morning | Subah | Udayam ⟨U-da-yam⟩ |
| Night | Raat | Raatri ⟨Raa-tri⟩ |
3. Spatial Directions
If your Google Maps is failing you and your cab driver is asking for directions, you need these four words.
- Iduru ⟨I-du-ru⟩ — Front / Straight. (Aage)
- Venuka ⟨Ve-nu-ka⟩ — Back. (Peeche)
- Eḍama ⟨E-da-ma⟩ — Left. (Baayein)
- Kuḍi ⟨Ku-di⟩ — Right. (Daayein)
Locational Anchors
- Ikkada ⟨Ik-ka-da⟩ — Here. (Yahan)
- Akkada ⟨Ak-ka-da⟩ — There. (Wahan)
Example Phrase: "Ikkada right, akkada left." (Right here, left there). Perfect for guiding a driver to your apartment complex.
